Electrical Systems

The electrical supplies at Makespace are very confusing, there are at least five distribution boards supplying the circuits in Makespace. The sockets in Makespace are not protected by RCDs; there are plans to address this in the near future.

Over the 2012 Christmas break, a quick survey was done and the following was found:

Class room

In the class room, circuits are fed from a distribution board located outside of Makespace and were not checked.

Corridor

In the corridor, circuits are fed from a distribution board located outside of Makespace and were not checked.

Main Workshop

The main workshop circuits are fed from the two distribution boards located in the workshop. The left-hand board supplies power for the lighting and sockets in the main workshop (lights only), kitchen, quiet room, store room and the right-hand distribution board. The sockets in the main workshop are fed from the right-hand distribution board. The right hand distribution board circuits are protected via an electrical contactor; when any of the red emergency stop buttons in the workshop are operated, the supply to the right hand board is isolated, and therefore any circuits supplied from it will also be isolated.

Secure Workshop

The secure workshop lights are fed from a distribution board located outside of Makespace and were not checked.

The sockets in the secure workshop are fed from the distribution board located in the secure workshop. The distribution board is protected via an electrical contactor; when any of the red emergency stop buttons in the secure workshop are operated, the supply to the distribution board is isolated, and therefore any circuits supplied from it will also be isolated. The sockets in the secure workshop are split into three circuits. A 32A ring main, 16A circuit control with a switched spur, and a 10A high level socket.

Office

The office lights and sockets are fed from its own distribution board. This distribution board is over 15 years old; since the office space is not going to be used for making, I don't see the need for the sockets to be RCD protected as long as the equipment used within the office is only IT equipment.

Kitchen

The kitchen lights and power are fed from the Main Workshop left-hand distribution board.

Quiet Room

The quiet room lights and power are fed from the Main Workshop left-hand distribution board. The low level and high level sockets are fed from different circuits.

Store Room

The store room's sockets are fed from the Main Workshop left-hand distribution board. The lights are fed from a distribution board outside of Makespace.

Faults

If you find a fault with any part of the electrical system at Makespace, stop using it, label it as faulty and please log it via infrastructure <at> makespace.org , and inform Brian Corteil aka 'BrianC', one of the directors, or a trusted member if available.
