Ultimaker 2 3D Printer Training

This page documents the process for being trained on the Ultimaker 2 Printer, and the list of members who have completed that training.

Summary

Training takes place in three main steps:

  • Group Training of 1-4 members, going through the equipment and how to use it (~1hr)
  • Individual Training Task, where an individual member is set a task to complete to prove and improve understanding (~20min each)
  • Recommended project oversight, where more experienced users oversee the projects being undertaken when cutting (first 2-3 projects)

A shorter conversion training session is available for members who were previously signed off to use the Makerbot 2X printer. These sessions last around 20 minutes and do not include individual sessions.

Booking

For discussing and arranging slots, please use the mailing list. New training sessions will be announced on the Meetup group.

Notes:

  • You can only be trained if you have RSVP'd to a Meetup session

Training Cheatsheet - Conversion Course

Members already trained on and familiar with the Makerbot 2X can attend this short conversion course to be signed off to use the Ultimaker 2 3D printer. Up to 10 people can be accommodated on each course, which lasts 20 to 30 minutes.

1. Physical Differences from the 2X

  • Glass build plate, no kapton tape
  • Single extruder
  • Push feed

2. General

  • Use the correct filament (2.85mm, NOT 3mm or 1.75mm)
  • New filament storage system

3. Printing

  • Fence / Brim / Raft
  • OK to leave printer unattended after the first few layers
  • Camera available for remote monitoring
  • Use only plastic implements for part removal, take care not to melt them on the hot end

4. Cura Software

  • Import and place
  • Simple mode
  • Brief overview of advanced mode
  • Temperature set on printer not slicer
  • Exporting to SD card

5. Unload / Load filament

  • How to feed (slow first, then fast)
  • Select correct material in menu
  • Changing temperature and speed parameters from printer
  • Demonstrate the atomic method of cleaning the extruder to prevent feed jams

6. Filament pricing

  • 5p per gram for PLA and ABS, to be kept under review
  • Include wastage!

Training Cheatsheet - Full Course

Group Session

1. Ask what each member hopes to get out of the 3D printer.

2. Explain how 3D printing works

3. Safety

  • Burn hazard – nozzle and build plate
  • Unit may move unexpectedly
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to ABS fumes

4. Damage to machine

  • Fragile build plate
  • Jammed filament

5. General

  • Use the correct filament (2.85mm)
  • Filament storage and feed system
  • Switch off when finished
  • Leave levelling to the owners but report any problems

6. PLA vs ABS

  • How to tell the difference
  • Different temperature
  • PLA Biodegradable

7. Software / workflow

  • Importing
  • Positioning on bed
  • Supports
  • Setting quality / speed trade off
  • Advanced options
  • Exporting to SD card

8. Unload / load

  • Attaching spool or loading from storage box
  • Feeding (slow then fast)
  • Beware of wrapping round axle
  • Setting material in menu
  • Adjusting parameters, e.g. ABS plate temperature

9. Printing

  • Preheating
  • Fence printing
  • Keep an eye on progress, locally or with camera
  • If leaving unattended, put a post-it with your contact details
  • Use only plastic implements for part removal

10. Other stuff

  • Demonstrate atomic method of cleaning the nozzle to prevent feed jams
  • Strength characteristics – orientation is important
  • Paying

Individual Training Task

Task

  • Should demonstrate import, setup, position and run
  • Choose a part that takes about 10 mins to print (preloaded on PC)

Steps

  • Set individual to work, don't prompt but do answer questions (or pose if needed)
  • Talk through design once done, question/check things etc
  • Proceed to printing (watch carefully all steps)

Assuming all ok:

  • Get them to read the health and safety notes about operation and materials
  • Add to the trained member list

Project Oversight

For next 2-3 projects, recommend member will find another more experienced trained user to support them (second pair of eyes)
