Safety

-No lose hair or clothing that might be caught in the machine!

-Security glasses have to be worn all the time, including people watching...

-Gear box access properly close

-wood blank relatively well balance (Unbalanced workpieces can shake loose and fly in any direction)

-always start with a low speed, if the wood piece is unbalanced, higher speed increase the risk of large vibrations.

-always having the tool resting on the tools rest

-when changing the position of the tool rest always stop the lathe!

Setting up the wood blank

- mark the centre of the end face the best you can.

- if using center, make sure the live one is properly set in the wood, it is recommended to use a face plate with screws or the chuck screw.

- make sure all the screw are fasten properly.

Roughing the blank

-change the position of the tool rest to have a confortable position, one hand pressing the tool against the tool rest.

-make sure you use the larger tool (rougher) and set up a small speed. When you have a rough cylinder, you can increase the speed.

-bring the tool in contact with the wood piece and translate the tools from on end to the other one.

carving your blank

-use the other tool to turn the shape you want!

carving a bowl

- you have to use the chuck, when you have a rough cylinder, at the end create a 50mm cylinder. You have to make sure it is perfectly flat, use the parting tools to create a sharp angle. Then reverse the wood piece, the cylinder you just created should fit in the chuck jaws, once it is fasten you can carve the inside.
